The General and his wife moved to Austin shortly after the Civil War, and the house was converted into a hospital by Federal troops. Later, during the Reconstruction, General George Armstrong Custer was stationed in Austin and visited the Neill-Cochran House. In 1876, Neill and his wife Jennie Chapman Neill bought the Neill-Cochran House.
